What does it mean to “work on yourself”

I (22m) have recently agreed with my partner who is currently travelling for 6 months that we need a break. We have lived together during a stressful time in our life where we both have lots going on independently.
We love each other deeply and it hurts the both of us to say we need a break – but right now we do. We both have agreed that we might reconcile when she’s back and give it another go (only if things are right and life allows us to)

Many aspects of my life are a mess. In fact most of it is currently is. I want to change myself for the better, genuinely for me. And if I want any chance of maintaining positive relationships with the people I love, I also need to do this.

I’m currently unemployed which has been difficult for the last few months – but I have studied for the last 5 years and have a degree and currently figuring employment/my career out.
My mental health at the moment feels damaged – I have bad habits, I’m going round in circles every day doing the same thing and nothing changes. I get to the end of the day and feel awful for it.
Because we are apart, and because I have a lot of time in my hands I figured that the time to start working on myself is NOW.

But my question is – HOW? What does it look like to “work on yourself”? What does it entail and what does it involve me actually doing for myself?
People always give the advice of “you need to work on yourself” but never discuss the how’s of it.

All suggestions are welcome… what did you do to work on yourself during your toughest times alone?
